A Brilliant Year of Learning and Growth in Year Five at The Linden Academy – A Leading Luton Primary School

It’s been a phenomenal year for our Year Five pupils at The Linden Academy, one of the most inclusive primary schools in Luton. With exciting learning experiences inside and outside the classroom, our children have shown maturity, enthusiasm, and a genuine love for learning that makes us proud to be known as a good school in Luton.
From welcoming real-life engineers to explore inventions, to using K’Nex to design and build their own creations, our Year Five children have embraced every opportunity with curiosity and creativity. They’ve also expanded their horizons by learning about the NHS, cooking in a local high school kitchen, and investigating science alongside secondary school pupils and staff - experiences that reflect the strength of our primary education offer and our strong community links.
A real academic highlight was a story-led maths unit inspired by One Grain of Rice by Demi. Through this beautifully illustrated narrative, children explored place value, multiplication, and problem-solving in a meaningful and engaging way. This cross-curricular approach is part of how we foster a love of maths in all pupils - one of the many reasons families trust us as their Luton primary school of choice.
Our budding scientists also enjoyed taking part in a Science Share Day, focused on the topic of materials. Working together, the children asked deep questions, led a class investigation, and confidently presented their findings to other classes and parents. It was a powerful example of how we nurture scientific thinking, collaboration, and communication skills in our learners.
Environmental learning has been a key part of the year, too. As part of our outdoor science work, the children planted seeds, explored how plants grow, and even designed and decorated bird boxes for our school’s wildlife garden. These engaging, hands-on activities support learning across science and design technology, while deepening environmental awareness.
Sport has shone brightly this year as well. From tennis and cricket to football and rugby, our Year Five children have shown skill, teamwork, and exceptional sportsmanship - values we promote as part of a well-rounded primary school experience in Luton. In class, they’ve built on prior knowledge in maths, mastering new skills such as converting fractions and rounding decimals with growing confidence.
In English, our pupils have been immersed in rich, exciting texts like Amari and the Night Brothers, Alex Rider: Stormbreaker, and Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. They’ve analysed how authors engage readers and applied these techniques in their own writing - from action scenes and diary entries to alternative endings for Macbeth. In reading, they’ve learned to back up their ideas with evidence and listen thoughtfully to others - a skillset that reflects the high expectations and supportive culture we foster at The Linden Academy.
From inter-school maths challenges and leadership opportunities to science, sport, and creative writing, Year Five have had a year to remember. They’re ending the year full of pride, confidence, and excitement for what lies ahead in Year Six.
At The Linden Academy, we believe a great primary school in Luton is one where children feel inspired, valued, and prepared for the future and Year Five have truly embodied that this year.
